Red Lion Folk Club The Club |
The Red Lion Folk Club, with its international reputation, remains the premier venue for folk music in the Midlands and in 2006 was voted BBC Radio 2’s Folk Club of the Year. It was started by the redoubtable Jim McPhee over 50 years ago with the present organisers taking over in 2001 and has been at the Red Lion for around 40 years. Over the years we are proud to have hosted many of the biggest names in the folk world—Robert Plant, Tom Paxton, Fairport Convention, Ralph McTell, Nic Jones, Steeleye Span, The Albion Band and many others. However, we are also delighted to have introduced many new young groups and artistes who have later become renowned. Every evening is different with great artistes from across the full spectrum of folk. The Club is run by a dedicated team of unpaid volunteers without whom we could not function. We are also grateful for the continuous support provided by the Red Lion. We meet on Wednesday evenings from September through May, the atmosphere is warm and friendly and excellent food is available downstairs in the bar. There is ample parking right outside. Everyone is welcome and tickets can be purchased on the door. (We have a limit on numbers and for a few popular evenings it may be worth buying online in advance - click on book now in the programme list - to ensure entry.) Membership costs £10 per year and allows you to buy reduced price tickets plus providing regular updates on the Club’s activities. |
